In 2018, when the US was separating babies and children from their families at the border, I was so angry and upset I wanted to do something. I found a group, Grannies Respond; Abuelos Responden who shared my shock and horror at these atrocities. That summer we traveled to TX to spread the word and rally people who weren't aware of the gravity of the situation.
After seeing several detention centers, who refused to allow us to distribute toys to those children, I knew I had to return. I wanted to continue my “Suspension of Perception” project to include images of the many migrants and immigrants who risked their lives traveling to the border, walking, taking the bus, the train and combinations of those methods to better their lives and the lives of their families here in the states.
These are some of the images I made at the Catholic Respite Center, in McAllen TX, August 2019, where Sr. Norma along with her staff and volunteers have been assisting immigrants to locate their families or sponsors in the states and give them food and shelter for a few days and nights before they leave for their final destinations.
I hope to return again.
